After overnight rain the sun broke through the clouds in time for the untimed practice prior to the start of the second and final days racing at the Cock o’the North Continental Road Races at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough.
The only timed session was for grid positions in the feature Cock o’the North Race just prior to the lunch break.
The first of the nine races, the second leg of the Superbikes got away on time at 1.00pm over eight laps of the 2.43-mile closed public roads course on the outskirts of the popular seaside venue.
Dean Harrison had pole position once again and got the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin, and at the end of the lap was just less than one second ahead of Ivan Lintin and Daley Mathison some three seconds back.
The lead was extended to 3.6 seconds on lap two, whilst Mathison was still third he was now nearly nine seconds back.
Harrison gained another two seconds on lap three with Mathison now 13 seconds down and being caught by Lee Johnston.
Half distance and the gap had widened to 8.282 seconds.
Harrison continued his dominance of the race to take the chequered flag, his first of the day by 16.454 seconds from Ivan Lintin with Lee Johnston snatching third on the final circuit.
Race 10 the Senior B 2nd leg, also over eight laps, saw Darren Cooper get the hole-shot, but it was Paul Gartland who was in front at the end of the lap.
The lead at the end of the second lap was down to 0.2 of a second, but a lap later it had been extended to 1.386 seconds, with Rad Hughes in third some 16 seconds back.
Half distance saw Gartland back on the defensive as the lead was down to half a second!
Lap five and the gap was similar – half a second and a lap later the distance was down to 0.3 of a second.
The penultimate lap the lead was up to one second and at the line it was minimal o.134 of a second for Paul Gartland, from Darren Cooper and Rad Hughes.
Race 11, third leg of the SuperTwins. Dean Harrison got the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin and held it at the end of the lap by 0.158 of a second from Ivan Lintin with James Cowton third.
Lap two and less than three-quarters of a second covered the first three.
Lap three and Lintin was now in front by one second with Cowton a further second down in third.
Half Distance and the gap between Lintin and Harrison was 0.484 of a second.
A lap later and the gap had extended to 0.663 of a second.
Three-quarters race distance and Lintin increased the distance to 0.770 of a second
Dean Harrison slips off on the seventh lap at Memorial – fortunately OK. Lintin was now some 15 seconds ahead of Cowton with Craig Shirlaw now third.
At the flag it was Ivan Lintin from James Cowton and Craig Shirlaw – the winning advantage18.492 seconds.
Race 12 – Sidecars 3rd Leg. It was double winner from Saturday Conrad Harrison who was in front at the end of the first lap of six, from Carl Fenwick with Dean Lindley third.
Lap two and Conrad was still in front, but it was Ian Bell now in second with Carle Fenwick third. 3.5 seconds was the leader’s advantage.
At half distance the lead was down to 1.410 seconds.
Lap four and the gap was down to 0.387 of a second, but Dean Lindley was now in third
Lap five, and the lead was down to 0.132 of a second in Harrison’s favour, and at the all important chequered flag it was Conrad Harrison and Lee Patterson by 0.051 of a second from Ian and Carl Bell with Dean Lindley and Robert Bell third.
Race 14 Supersport A 2nd leg with Dean Harrison once again in pole position. But it was James Cowton who gained the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin on the first of the eight laps and at the end of the lap it was Cowton by 0.729 of a second from Harrison and Mathison.
Lap two and Harrison was in front by 0.697 of a second from Cowton and Mathison still in third 3 seconds adrift.
Lap three and the gap had widened to 3.2 seconds with Mathison a similar distance behind in third.
Half distance and it was Harrison, Cowton and Mathison, the leaders advantage 6 seconds with third man another 3 seconds down.
Lap five, and Dan Frear moved into third place.
Lap six and Harrisons lead was 9.5 seconds, but Cowton was now under pressure from Frear, one second between them.
Lap seven, and Cowton kept the one second difference between himself and Frear as Harrison continued on his way to his second victory of the day.
At the chequered flag Dean Harrison took his six win of the meeting by 8.392 seconds from James Cowton and Dan Frear.
Race 15 Supersport B 2nd leg. Craig Shirlaw enjoyed a start to finish race victory extending a 3.5 second lead at the end of the opening lap to 14.775 seconds at the end of the eight laps.
James Hinchliffe was second and Chris Smith third.
Race 16 the Cock o’the North Feature Race. Ivan Lintin had pole position for the eight lap race.
At the end of the first lap it was Dean Harrison by 1.3 seconds from Lee Johnston and Ivan Lintin.
Lap two and the gap had risen to 2.462 seconds, with positions remaining static.
Lap three, and Harrison now commanded a 4.6 second lead, but the gap between Johnston and Lintin was just 0.4 of a second and in turn Cowton was just 0.2 of a second behind Lintin.
Half distance lap and Harrison still in front from Johnston, but Cowton was high-sided, but OK, letting Lintin into third place.
Lap five, Harrison had a 7.2 second lead from Johnston with only 0.3 of a second between him and Lintin.
Lap six and Lintin had taken 0.1 of a second out of Johnston, as Harrison continued towards the chequered flag with a 7.5 second lead.
Lap seven, and Johnston had responded opening the gap to 0.4 of a second.
Dean Harrison took the chequered flag retaining the trophy he won for the first time in 2013. Ivan Lintin was second and Lee Johnston took the final podium spot.
Race 17, the SuperTwins 4th Leg, Dean Harrison pulled off the grid at the end of the warm-up lap.
James Cowton got the hole-shot into Mere Hairpin for the final solo race of the day. At the end of the lap it was Cowton, Lintin and Frear, with only 0.3 of a second separating first and second.
Lap two and the positions remained the same for the first three.
Lap three and it was Ivan Lintin who was at the head of the field by 1.7 seconds with Dan Frear still in third.
Half distance saw Lintin with a 2 second lead over Cowton and Frear a further six seconds back in third
Lap five and the advantage had grown to 3.4 seconds with another two seconds being added at the end of the sixth lap.
Lap seven saw no changes and at the flag it was Ivan Lintin, James Cowton and Daniel Frear.
Race 18 – Sidecars 4th Leg. Conrad Harrison and Lee Patterson pulled out after the warm-up lap.
Dean Lindley was in the lead at the end of the first lap of six half a second in front of Carl Fenwick with Ian Bell up to third from the rear of the grid.
A lap later the Bells were in front by 0.7 of a second from Lindley and Fenwick.
Half distance and the father and son had built up a 2.8 second advantage which increased to 7.7 seconds.
Dean Lindley and Robert Bell were second and Carl Fenwick and Dean Kilkenny third.
So ended the 2014 Cock o’the North Road Races.
