One of the many newcomers to the 2014 KDM Cookstown 100 is Lisburn rider, Gareth Keys, a family steeped in motorcycle racing, with his Grandfather (Harry), his Dad (Rodney) and uncle Trevor all having competed in the sport. Both Harry and Trevor competed in the Cookstown races during their career.
The Orrittor circuit has always been a favourite for Gareth as a spectator, but this year, the 23 year old vehicle technician at Sere Motors in Lisburn, will get the chance to sample one of his favourite circuits.
Speaking to Gareth after a training session as he prepares for the season ahead, the bubbly lad explained to me ;”it always has good tight racing at Cookstown, and being the first road race of the year it's exciting to get down and watch but this year I won't be in the bar or relaxing on the bank, I will racing my Keysracing BMW 1000RR in the superbike and KDM Cookstown 100 races and D&GW RS250 Honda in the 250 race. I'm really looking forward to finally getting to race at it. Hopefully I will be able to hold my own in each class.
I have been getting mega help from Neil, Lisa and Becki (girl friend) along with Moto tech, Ian mercer, tool tech, evoke promotions and Rea timber craft.. Not to mention my dad Rod and grandad Harry. Everyone has be so supportive for this and making a big effort for me so I though this year I will repay them and work hard and train hard to get the results our wee team deserve!! This may be my first KDM Cookstown but I don't plan on hanging around. Will have to see what the outcome is on the day”
