Title: DAVID WOOD MEMORIAL TROPHY RACES - BISHOPSCOURT RACING CIRCUIT
Post by: Mago on July 14, 2014, 06:50:09 am
David Wood a man who did so much for so many in Irelands Motorcycle Racing World!

David Wood was the Chairman of the Motorcycle Road Racing Club of Ireland for many years and his charisma, wit, flair, panache and hard work are something that we will never forget or be able to replace.

He was also an Ambassador for the sport, Manager, Team boss, Friend, Sponsor and Supporter to many folk throughout Ireland.

He started racing in the 70s and was probably the first local competitor to see himself as an advert, able to sell space on his machine for money to fund his racing. His racing days ended at Kirkistown with a badly broken leg. He then rose to a Manager roll with none other than Joey Dunlop, the King of the Roads.

He introduced the biggest and only sponsorship packages to Irelands Motorcycle Sport Governing body of Road Racing... the MCUI UC. This sponsorship included the days of the Embassy, Superkings, Lambert & Butler and Regal Championships. They all ended in 2004 with the ban on tobacco advertising. 100s of £1000s was injected into our sport with the guidance and persuasion of David.

Many other products arrived in Ireland with the help of Davy, Arai Helmets, exhaust systems, oil products, knee sliders, race suits, energy drinks etc. The list goes on.

Without a doubt racing in Ireland would not be what it is today without the name David Wood being part of our past.

David passed away 10 years ago in May after being diagnosed with cancer and although there is an annual David Wood Scholarship awarded to the most promising young rider there is no recognition race event in memory of him. The Dundrod Club will have The David Wood Grand Prix House built later in the year at the paddock of one of David’s favourite courses and home of the Ulster Grand Prix which is a great project.

The Motor Cycle Road Racing Club of Ireland have presented a Club Cup over several years in memory of David but we feel now is the time to take this to another level.

Our 20th September Short Circuit Championship event at Bishopscourt Racing Circuit will be promoted as the ‘’David Wood Memorial Trophy Races’’ and unlike all other championship events the Supersport 600 Class will be the feature event of the day.

David was instrumental in the introduction of Supersport 600 machines in Ireland under the Regal Banner back in 1988.

We have planned this event with the intentions of making it sustainable for years to come and call on race fans to come and enjoy the event but help remember and celebrate the life of David Wood.

We have no doubt this event will be one of the most prestigious on our racing calendar and will attract a quality, bumper entry.

This event has also gained the help, support and partnership of many of the people, race product companies and friends of David and Team Wood. We are very grateful to every one of them. A special thanks to Lee, David’s wife, for the permission and support for this event.

All sponsorship raised will be added to the Clubs substantial prize fund.

Further event details and race sponsors will be released in the coming weeks.

But for now 20th September is the date to plan for a trip to Bishopscourt Racing Circuit!!
